Subjects and Programs



The English curriculum is organised into three inter-related strands - Language, Literature and Literacy. Within the strands, the processes of speaking and listening, reading, viewing and writing are represented and language elements such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary are developmentally sequenced.  It aims to ensure students:

  • learn to listen, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts
  • appreciate, enjoy and use the English language to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue
  • understand how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms
  • develop an appreciation of literature.

Not only do we teach units of work that address these, at Eumundi we continually implement approaches that cater for the development on the individual child as a learner.  This includes implementing a differentiated spelling program and an approach to reading that identifies the reading skills/behaviours each student requires.


The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics is organised around the interaction of three content strands and four proficiency strands.  The content strands are number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. They describe what is to be taught and learnt in a sequential manner.  The proficiency strands are understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. They describe how content is explored or developed; that is, the thinking and doing of mathematics.

Teachers at Eumundi have completed considerable professional development in collaboration with schools from the Noosa Hinterland and Gympie Mathematics Alliance clusters to enable our students to become confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics. 

At Eumundi we:

  • have moved away from a ‘chalk and talk’ direct teaching method, to a more student-centred approach
  • recognise that there are facts and procedures required for knowing and understanding mathematics
  • value investigating, thinking, reasoning and relating mathematics to real-life situations
  • know students need to explore and investigate to be able to discuss and justify
  • emphasise the importance of the process not just the answer


The science curriculum aims to develop:

  • an interest in science as a means of expanding students’ curiosity and willingness to explore and ask questions
  • an understanding of living things, of Earth and its place in the cosmos, and of the physical and chemical processes, which includes a knowledge of the biological, chemical, physical, earth and space sciences
  • an understanding of scientific inquiry and the ability to use a range of scientific inquiry methods, including questioning; planning and conducting experiments and investigations based on ethical principles; collecting and analysing data; evaluating results; and drawing critical, evidence-based conclusions
  • an ability to communicate scientific understanding and findings
  • an ability to solve problems and make informed, evidence-based decisions

This learning area is organised into strands – Science Understanding which consists of biological sciences, chemical sciences, Earth and space sciences and physical sciences; Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. 

At Eumundi, the teaching of science by the classroom teachers is further enhanced through science being taught by a specialist teacher.  In addition to this, scientific knowledge, concepts and skills are an integral part of our Enviro days at our unique Environmental Centre.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

The humanities and social sciences are the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. The humanities and social sciences learning area includes a study of history and geography from Prep to Year 6, civics and citizenship from Year 3 to Year 6, and economics and business in Years 5 and 6.  Through studying HASS, students will develop the ability to question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to change.

Health and Physical Education (HPE)

Health and physical education provides a foundation for developing active and informed members of society who pursue good health. Health and physical education is organised into two content strands: personal, social and community health and movement and physical activity.

Our health and physical education specialist teacher teaches a program to develop specific movement skills as well as allowing students to participate in a range of physical activities.  Our HPE specialist teacher also prepares our students for Eumundi State School’s district swimming carnivals, cross country events and athletics carnivals.

Personal, social and community health lessons are conducted by the classroom teacher.

The Arts

The arts curriculum covers five subjects – dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts.  Skills and concepts in these subjects are developed across year level bands (Prep to Year 2, Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6).  This learning area requires students to not only make artworks but respond to them as well.  Making includes learning about and using knowledge, skills, techniques, processes, materials and technologies to explore arts practices and make artworks that communicate ideas; while responding includes exploring, responding to, analysing and interpreting artworks.   

Our students are taught skills of singing and playing within musical contexts from a music specialist.  As an extra-curricular opportunity, an Instrumental Music Teacher also visits the school each week to instruct students from Years 4 to Year 6 who wish to play brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, leading to part work and ensemble performance.

This arts curriculum is further enhanced at Eumundi by students participating in a series of art lessons from a team of professional artists that visit our classes providing a variety of workshops teaching the students raw techniques, skills and mediums, as well as educating them about famous artists.  This typically occurs in Term 3.


The Australian Curriculum - Technologies describes two distinct but related subjects, with both being taught and assessed at Eumundi. 

These subjects are:

  • Design and technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce designed solutions for authentic needs and opportunities
  • Digital technologies, which involves students developing an understanding of how to represent data using digital technologies, and various digital systems that includes hardware, software and networks.  In addition to this, students develop skills to be able to use digital systems to create ideas and information, and to define, design and implement digital solutions (including programming), and evaluate these solutions and existing information systems against specified criteria.

Where appropriate, Eumundi teachers are developing units of work that incorporate Technologies knowledge and skills through a STEM and/or STEAM approach.  STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.   STEAM investigates the same concepts, but adds an art component to it.

Students also have access to Digital Technologies lessons with a specialist Digital Technologies teacher.


At Eumundi State School, Italian is taught to Year 5 and 6 students by a specialist teacher for two lessons each week.
