Students with a disability

Disability support at Eumundi State School

Team support

Students with a learning disability are supported at Eumundi State School by a team consisting of the Class Teacher, a Special Education Program Teacher (SEP Teacher) and Teacher Aides.  Education Queensland Specialists available for assessment and consultation to assist with this support, include the Guidance Officer, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Advisory Visiting Teacher (disability specific).  Currently there are two full time SEP Teacher positions at Eumundi State School.  Eumundi School also has access to support through the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) based at Cooroy State School.

Verification

Support is available for students with a disability who have been verified by Education Queensland.  The student needs to meet the criteria set by EQ for one or more of the following categories; Physical Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Speech/Language Impairment and Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The SEP Teacher and EQ Specialists work with the parents of the student with a disability to organise and complete the required testing, reporting and paperwork which has to be submitted to EQ for verification.  This verification is essential to attract funding to provide support.  Students who do not meet the verification criteria are considered for support through whole school inclusive practices.

Adjustments provide access

An Educational Adjustment Profile (EAP) is drawn up for the verified student.  This document sets out the level of adjustments required in a range of educational focus areas.  These areas are Curriculum, Communication, Social Participation and Emotional Well-Being, Health and Personal Care, Safety, Learning Environment and Access.  It is these reasonable adjustments that the team work on to implement so that the student with a disability can access learning at school.

Individual goals

In addition to the EAP, an Individual Support Plan (ISP) is compiled in consultation with the team.  An Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) may also be compiled with permission from parents if a student needs to work at a different year level to achieve success and progress.  The ISP and ICP are reviewed twice a year to address current needs and to plan for optimum access and learning for the individual student.
